Great Scot!

April 29, 2009

I’ve just uploaded one of my projects from the last semester. Great Scot! was an identity and packaging project for a food company (imagined, not real unfortunately) that makes high end hot cocoa. I was able to define the parameters of this project and so I decided to use some digital mockup (Autodesk Maya) and presentation (Keynote) tools. I’ve uploaded some of my sketches and concepts below for this project to show my process on the Great Scot! project.

So you can see the ideas from the beginning of the project definitely shifted over time. I started out with the more obvious ideas for Scottish company, kilts, bagpipes, loch ness monster, castles, etc. I realized that rather than concentrate on elements of Scotland it was better to concentrate on the expression itself and make the logo a typographic treatment alone. I looked at some typefaces from the Arts & Crafts movement. After some Mackintosh inspiration and some subliminal Paula Scher influence, I finalized the logo.

The packaging also went through an evolution. I began experimenting with different materials, including cut paper, in order to decide which direction the packaging should take. After deciding on a more graphic look in order to emphasize the tongue-in-cheek humor of the subject matter in the cocoa line I moved ahead with the execution. Check out the final product in my portfolio.
